The Marsh

No news as they say is good news. Not much new has happened on the marsh. We’re still doing the same thing: pulling up Himalayan balsam. And at the weekend I could hear people saying “I can’t find any more here”

Which is music to my ears!

We’re not done by any means. There’s weeks more of this if we are to eradicate it. And eradicate it we will.

Oddly this only appeals to a small group of Marshians. The same small group turn up time and time again. Even an invite for earthlings to come and join us got no response.

I suppose pulling up a beautiful flower goes against the grain for many.

But there are so many other beautiful wildflowers to see.

Deep in the marsh where the wild balsam grows is also the place to find them.

The marsh is an astonishing place. It is so varied and there is so much life.

Some of us have already been to the far flung corners of the earth. And yet here, in the heart of Reading they say things like “This reminds me of Sumatra”

“No, more like Borneo, where I met a man wearing nothing but a penis sheath”

Folks have flown across the planet to experience a wilderness and yet within sight of a tower block they experience the same thing. Without the naked man.

Is that what’s missing? That can be arranged.

But why? The life on the marsh is just incredible. And we’re not just visiting. We’re here to make it even better.

And we’re having little holidays while we’re doing it.

We don’t charge. Taking part and being a part of the solution to massive biodiversity loss is free. In fact we provide incentives to take part.

Biscuits. I’ve never mentioned biscuits before.

If a rich butter shortbread tempts you we have that too.

We’ll be out next weekend.

Be tempted by the biscuits and stay for the planet saving.
