Fobney Lock

If Fobney meadow is epic wilderness, Fobney lock is epic dereliction right next door. Nobody cares about this place either.

The lock is also the local swimming pool. The swimmers have to get out to let the boats through though. The boaters have to wait. The tranquil life on a boat being delayed.

The turbine house. Not that Turbine house.

This one

It does display unique and accessible art though.

Every few years Thames water talk about turning it into a cultural centre, and they employ an officer who makes no progress. Yet it still has become a cultural centre. Organically.

This used to be a water quality test station. Since it’s dereliction the county’s water quality has dropped

It’s all so accessible

And welcoming

People rush there

And away again

They’re attracted to the water features

And the floating gardens

Full of colour and information

People come from the nearby town to follow a variety of pursuits.

You can take in the views

The perspectives

And the detail

The carefully considered landscape aesthetic

And the subliminal messages

The sense of security

And of peace

Where town and country meet

No wonder it is the heart of the Lower Kennet valley

It draws you in

I enjoy it as I never know who I’m going to meet

Maybe nobody cares but it is much appreciated
